Shore to ship power infrastructure to be boosted

So far, shore power is being used extensively for vessels with moderate power requirements—less than 50 to 100 KW. For mega vessels — 100 KW up to 10 to 15 MW — the grid capacity, among other things, must be upgraded.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways will develop infrastructure for supplying shore to ship power for coastal vessels, large container carriers and harbour crafts. The infrastructure development will be done by Power Finance Corporation. The Ministry of Power and State DISCOMs need to be brought on the same page so that distribution licences for ports can be obtained immediately. The vision is to provide ships docking at Indian ports with renewable energy rather than operating on diesel gensets.

For mega vessels with larger power requirements — 100 KW up to 10 to 15 MW — the grid capacity, among other things, must be upgraded. In May 2018, DG Shipping had issued Standard Operating Procedures for shore to ship supply.
