The development came in the backdrop of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Agartala Land Port.

About 250 Bangladeshi nationals have been travelling from Agartala MBB airport daily to different parts of India for treatment and tourism purposes.

However, there is no assured transportation from the check post, which is around three kilometres from the city. Till now, travellers had to pay a hefty price for electric tricycles or autorickshaws to reach the bus stands, railway stations and the airport.

Launching the service at ICP, Agartala Municipal Corporation mayor Dipak Majumdar said, “The service is aimed to enhance the convenience for Bangladeshi passengers at an affordable cost. The significant growth in passenger traffic over the past decade through the Akhaura Land Customs Station (LCS) has reached approximately 40,000 every month,” he said.

Majumdar added that about 50% of passengers on every flight originating from Agartala are from Bangladesh resulting in commercial and financial benefits for the state. Reflecting on the past decade, he said the introduction of various services at ICP for Bangladeshi nationals contributed to strengthening the relationship between the two countries. “The increased passenger traffic and flourishing import-export trade between India and Bangladesh has shown a positive sign in Tripura,” Majumdar said.
