According to Chairman Sirimevan Ranasinghe, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) intends to look for investors in order to construct a second logistics center in Colombo Port next year, followed by a third later. Ranasinghe stated at the Voyage Sri Lanka 2024 seminar, which was hosted by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board on November 26, that “we have made plans and are likely to float invitations to interested investors early next year for the Bloemandhal Center.”
“This is already awarded and will start construction early among the planned logistic centers.” China’s CM Ports firm and Sri Lanka’s Access Group formed a collaboration that was given the 5.1-hectare Battenberg site in the South Harbour area.
The public-private cooperation will last for 35 years. It is anticipated that the initial phase of the 392 million dollar logistics center will cost 175 million dollars. The Bloemandhal Center is a multistory warehouse structure that spans 42,000 square feet over 5.5 acres of land. A third logistics center is also being planned by the SLPA for the West Breakwater common area.
“The five-hectare West Breakwater common area is also for a logistics center and will be offered when the land becomes available after the construction of the East container terminal yard is finished,” Ranasinghe stated. In addition to increasing demand for ships and container berths, the logistics centers would generate new activity at the port.
