Sarbananda Sonowal, Union minister of ports, shipping & waterways and minister of AYUSH, visited Mormugao Port Authority and opened various projects of the port and also launched virtually projects of New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), recently. He was accompanied by Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant and Shripad Naik, minister of state for ports, shipping and waterways.

Sonowal virtually inaugurated the modernisation of Mallya Gate, construction of Solid Waste Management facilities and the design and development of the bilingual website of NMPA. The minister virtually laid the foundation for the construction of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) from the main gate to KIOCL Junction and the construction of the truck terminal near the Custom House adjacent to NH 66.

A V Ramana, chairman, NMPA, said the port has three entry and exit gates for evacuation and movement of the cargo. To de-congest the increasing vehicle movement in the harbour area, modernisation of the main gate from two lanes to four lanes was taken up and completed with a project cost of Rs 3.30 crore. Further, in view of reducing the effect of waste on the environment, the Port Authority decided to self-manage the garbage generated by converting it into high quality manure through vermi-compost technology. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 50 lakh. The project was completed on October 12. The bilingual website is developed by Centre for Development of Imaging Technology at a cost of Rs 12.25 lakh, he said. The construction of PQC Road from main gate to KIOCL Junction is estimated to cost Rs 3.75 crore. The work is scheduled to be completed in February 2023. The NMPA decided to upgrade the existing feasible pavement Truck Parking Terminal near NH 66 with PQC for an amount of Rs 3.71 crore. The truck terminal can accommodate about 200 heavy trucks and is set to be complete by October 31.
