Sri Lanka to liberalize airport fuel, ground handling, catering

Sri Lanka is planning to open ground handling, catering and jet fuel supply at airports to the private sector, which was a state monopoly, Director General of Civil Aviation P A Jayakantha said.

“Sri Lanka government is in the process of inviting private parties to the provision of services such as ground handling, jet fuel supply and catering services at our international airports,” Jayakantha told reporters.

“Previously the legislation itself prevented such functions.”

Sri Lanka is already in the process of liberalizing fuel supply at airports, Ports and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

A storage facility with 24,000 metric tonnes in being built at Colombo port to hold jet fuel. At Ratmalana domestic airport, a private party is to be allowed to store and supply fuel.
