State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said that Payra Port will be operational in the middle of next year.
He said this at a round table meeting at National Press Club on Sunday.
The state minister said: “Some time ago, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the first terminal and eight vessels of Payra Port.”
“A modern four-lane bridge is being built over the Andharmanik river at a cost of Tk600-700 crores. Developed countries also want to invest in Bangladesh,” he added.
He said: “We want the goods to come through waterways through Chittagong Port, Payra Port and Mongla Port. There was a discussion regarding this with the prime minister.”
Commenting that with the effective use of waterways, problems will be reduced to a large extent, the minister of state for shipping said: “Terminals have been constructed at Muktarpur and Kumudini. A tender has been issued for the construction of the terminal at Khanpur. There are also plans to build a terminal at Shimulia ghat.”
World Bank fund activities are ongoing from Dhaka to Chittagong. Arrangements are being made so that 200 to 300 ships can come to the ports, he added.
