Tanjung Pelepas Port (PTP) was able to grow well this year despite the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on world trade, says Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Transport Minister said that as of Sunday (Aug 21), PTP recorded 6.98 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) and was on track to exceed seven million TEUs by the end of this month.
“Many ports are impacted by the conflict which has affected activities, being unable to take in certain items. Malaysia is also affected,” he said after officiating the Johor Port Board Keluarga Malaysia corporate social responsibility programme at its headquarters here on Monday (Aug 22).
“However, we expect the last four months of this year to be busy as (activity) is increasing due to many items being sent because of Christmas celebrations,” he added.
He also said PTP recorded 11.2 million TEUs last year even as ports around the world were facing issues.
This was an increase of 14% over 9.8 million TEUs in 2020, when it was ranked 15th globally.
“I am confident that, as the main transshipment port in the region, PTP is competitive and strategically located.
“In terms of efficiency, it is able to handle any containers especially for transshipment,” said Dr Wee.
