Tata Steel on Wednesday dispatched the first consignment of Tata Aggreto, a branded steel slag aggregates, to Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for construction of roads in Arunachal Pradesh under Project Arunank.

“By supplying Aggreto, which is a value-added industrial by-product, for road construction, the private steel major has reiterated its commitment to build a sustainable steel sector by adopting the principles of circular economy and pioneered in a nation building initiative,” the company stated in a statement.

The first rake of Tata Aggreto was virtually flagged off by Union minister for science and technology Jitendra Singh from Tatanagar railway station. The Tata Aggreto has been extensively used in the construction of national highways, state highways, town and rural roads in Jharkhand and neighbouring Odisha.

“The National Highway-33 is India’s first national highway constructed using the processed steel slag,” the statement added.

Tata Aggreto and Tata Nirman (processed steel slag aggregates) are used as replacement for natural aggregates to build roads. The steel slag improves durability and reduces the cost of building roads.

The company will be supplying 1,200 tonnes of processed steel slag aggregates to the BRO project in Arunachal Pradesh. “The success of the initiative will open new avenues for sustainable utilisation of steel slag in road construction near border areas,” the company said.

“We are committed to deliver sustainable products having minimal ecological footprint by adopting newer technologies and developing new products and applications,” said vice-president, Iron Making, Tata Steel, Uttam Singh, while flagging off the rake.

Senior officials from BRO, Tata Steel, CRRI (central road research institute) and Niti Aayog attended the function.
