In an effort to increase urban freight efficiency and reduce logistics costs, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has finalized model city logistics plans (CLPs) for Bengaluru and Delhi. The Green Freight Project of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) aided the necessary state agencies in creating the model CLPs and implementing global best practices as part of the Indo-German technical collaboration.
This is essential for raising the general standard of living in cities while lowering traffic, pollution, and transportation expenses. According to Rajeev Singh Thakur, Additional Secretary in the DPIIT, the Karnataka and Delhi governments have supported the creation of these programs. To help all Indian governments and local authorities create a strategy for effective freight and logistics movement within the city, the suggested guidelines for creating CLPs for Indian cities were prepared based on the experiences gained in creating CLPs for Bengaluru and Delhi.
The DPIIT claims that this will fulfill the nation’s goal of reaching carbon Net Zero by 2070 and further the Central government’s focus on ease of doing business. In order to create an effective and sustainable city logistics ecosystem, the guidelines are also meant for practitioners in states and cities. According to the guidelines, a city can use them to customize its vision, goals, and indicators to meet local needs and unique city features, gather pertinent data, analyze its freight distribution problems, and select the right infrastructure, policy measures, and services in cooperation with other pertinent actors and stakeholders.
Additionally, this guideline is regarded as a live document that will continue to develop as a result of stakeholder input and feedback. DPIIT will also provide its assistance to willing states and UTs in creating city logistics plans. India introduced the National Logistics Policy in 2022, which supports the creation of logistics plans at the city level. The goal of this project is to lower logistical expenses while enhancing the sustainability and effectiveness of urban freight transportation.
