The Union Cabinet has cleared the decks for several projects including the development of greenfield major port at Vadhavan at a cost of Rs.76,220Cr. This will be a high-end infrastructure port to join the league of top 10 ports in the world.
A special purpose vehicle, Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL), jointly formed by JNPA and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) will take up the port development. It has a shareholding of 74 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively. Infrastructure at the port includes nine container terminals, each 1000 meters long, four multipurpose berths, including the coastal berth, four liquid cargo berths, a Ro-Ro berth, and a Coast Guard berth. These will create a capacity of 298 million metric tonnes per annum including 23.2 million teus of container handling capacity.
