The Can Gio neighbourhood of Ho Chi Minh City will soon have a transshipment centre thanks to the initiatives that Vietnam Maritime Corporation and MSC have taken to realise their dream. The parties have made a proposal to Pham Minh Chinh, the premier of Vietnam, whose administration is reportedly in favour of developing the transhipment centre. The proposed transshipment, with an estimated investment requirement of $6 billion, would have an annual capacity of 10 to 15 million teu. Singapore, the largest transhipment port in the world but one that is becoming increasingly expensive, is apparently hoping to transfer some transhipment goods to this facility.

The project will be phased into seven development phases. MSC and VIMC (formerly Vinalines) are said to want to implement begin construction of phase 1 in 2024 and to launch the first phase of the terminal in 2027. The final phase is expected to be ready in 2040.

Vietnamese media said that the proposed major transhipment port will help create a competitive advantage vis-à-vis other countries in the region and achieve a breakthrough in Vietnam’s economic development.
