Several projects are expected to increase coal’s share in the power mix

Vietnam plans the construction of new coal-fired power plants. Currently, the Vietnamese power mix includes 20 coal-fired power plants with the capacity to produce 13,000 megawatts. This figure will be vastly increased if the country moves ahead with its plans.

According to Vietnam’s revised Power Development Plan, the share of coal in the power mix will increase from 30.4 percent in 2015 to 49.3 percent in 2020, 55 percent in 2025, and 53.2 percent in 2030.

The increase on coal reliance is not consensual. Environmentalists and local communities have protested the construction of coal-fired power plants, while others, looking at the economic side of the question, warn that Vietnam has become a net importer of coal since 2015.
