The Visakhapatnam Port Trust is now focused on new cargo to achieve its target of 72 million tonnes (MT) of cargo handling this fiscal. The port handled 69.03MT of cargo in 2021-22 and was the fourth top performer among the major ports, in spite of the pandemic. It is to be noted that Visakhapatnam Port Trust achieved 72.72MT in cargo handling a couple of years ago and the port had handled 69.84MT of cargo in the year 2020-21.
The port Chairman, Mr. K Ramamohana Rao revealed that his port is focusing on attracting new cargo such as bauxite, oil and food grains among others. The port is focusing on construction of two godowns for slow moving cargo such as rice, food grains, while old godowns are also being renovated. There are plans for around Rs.200 to Rs.300 crore processed food grains cargo being handled by private players.
