October 7, 2020: Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) sustained in the pandemic period and handled 32.77 million tonnes (mt) of cargo during first 6 months of current FY as compared to 34.75 mt handled in previous year, a 5.7% (1.98 mt) decline, which is less than decline registered by all major ports put together.
All 12 major ports handled a volume of 245 mt during April to August 2020, as compared to 294 mt during the same period of last year. A decline of 16.5% in cargo was registered. VPT handled 1016 vessels during April to September this year compared to 1056 vessels handled during the same period last year. The cargo decline is notable in steam coal, coking coal, crude oil and containerised cargo.
