The port will not only reduce the transit time for customers by 30 to 40 percent, but logistics cost will also come down by 3 to 4%. The Adani Group is waiting for environmental clearance following which they will quickly complete the remaining phase II, III and IV of the seaport, adding a quay length of 1.2km. The port’s full master plan capacity will be 5 million teus. The vision is to make Vizhinjam the most technologically advanced port in South Asia and involve more of local people in the port’s operations.

Despite India’s rising trade with the world, the country did not have a dedicated transshipment port, resulting in three-fourths or 75 per cent of India’s transshipped cargo being handled by ports outside India. The port will particularly handle traffic between the US, Europe Africa, and the Indian subcontinent as well as US, Europe, Africa and the Far East.
