The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has initiated the process of removing sunken fishing trawlers and boats from various jetties at the Fishing Harbour. This effort, which began on September 11, is part of the harbour’s modernization and upgrade plan.

Removing these wrecks is a complex task due to the prolonged submersion, with most vessels being buried in silt and covered in rust. To address this, the Port Authority is using advanced technology to identify and clear the debris. Underwater video recording is conducted to locate the wrecks, while underwater cutters are used to break down the structures. High-capacity generators and compressors are employed to clear the accumulated silt.

The removal project, which involves expert services, is estimated to cost ₹1.20 crore, and the port aims to complete the work by December 2024. The Visakhapatnam Port remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of fishermen, as well as the efficient operation of activities at the Fishing Harbour.

For several years, dozens of boats and trawlers have remained submerged, causing obstructions to vessel movement and affecting internal harbour safety. With the support of local fishermen, six trawlers and 11 boats were identified as sunken at the seabed.
