The Kochi Water Metro was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April of this year. It is the first water metro in India and connects 10 islands around the city on the Malabar coast through battery-operated electric hybrid boats.

The service will be started by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in Ayodhya and in the Parliamentary constituency of PM Modi soon. The Ayodhya-bound vessel will reach its destination around January 14 next year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the Water Metro service in Ayodhya on January 22 on the occasion of consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla.

The Water Metro service between Guptar Ghat and Naya Ghat is likely to boost religious tourism in the city. Two jetties from Kolkata have already reached Ayodhya. In Kochi during the inauguration, CM Pinarayi Vijayan said that it will bring a major revolution in water transportation and boost the tourism of the state. It was funded by the Kerala government and the German firm KfW, and the boats are manufactured at Cochin Shipyard Limited.
