The first-ever WISTA India ExCo Conference in Mumbai, which also marked the inaugural WISTA International Mid-Term Meeting in India, showcased the growing focus on sustainable shipping and diversity. With membership surpassing 6,000, the Executive Committee gathered for two days to discuss professional training opportunities, the upcoming IMO/WISTA Women in Maritime Survey, and a review of an equity fund aimed at assisting National WISTA Associations (NWAs) facing challenges.

Under the theme “Navigating Change: The Future of Sustainable Shipping,” the conference brought together maritime leaders, consulates, industry professionals, and local stakeholders to collaborate on advancing greener practices within the sector. Elpi Petraki, President of WISTA International, emphasized that diversity and teamwork are crucial in overcoming industry challenges while shaping a more sustainable future.

“Shipping is inherently diverse, bringing together individuals from different cultures and backgrounds. It thrives on teamwork,” Petraki stated. “Even in tough times, women can drive transformative change by working together.”

A key highlight of the conference was the WISTA International ExCo team’s visit to the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy, where they engaged with female cadets and explored initiatives to encourage more women to pursue seafaring careers.

Petraki acknowledged India’s progress in maritime inclusivity, noting that over 450 cadets graduate annually, with a growing number of women joining the profession.
