JNPT celebrated “Swachhta Pakhwada” from 16th-30th September with various Swachhta activities undertaken every day.
The most important initiative taken during Swachhta Pakhwada 2019 was awarding of the work for Comprehensive Solid Waste Processing facility at Port. JNPT is first amongst major Ports of India to initiate development of Solid Waste Processing facility as per Solid Waste Management Rule, 2016.
The unit has 10 MT/Day Solid Waste Processing capacity and will be utilized for port, port users and Grampanchyats within port estate i.e. Karal, Sonari, Sawarkhar and Jashkhar. The Solid waste collection will be done on door to door basis for which Ghanta Gadi’s will be provided with appropriate partition for the collection of wet and dry waste separately. At present 6MT/Day solid waste is generated and the Bio Gas plant will generate biogas which will be utilised for captive electricity generation during operations.
The process also involves installation of hydraulic balling press machine for processing plastic bottles, paper, card board, wrappers, pouches of eatables, polyethylene bags, blisters multi- layered bags etc. The decanter centrifuge with dewatering facility for waste processing will separate sludge and water, and the sludge will be used as compost for gardening.
NPTIn addition to it, the Port has already commissioned a Sewage Water Treatment Plant adept with the latest technology in order to recycle waste water. The Port at present uses an average of 2 MLD / day of recycled water from the Plant for gardening purpose, which means nearly 60 MLD of fresh water, is saved every month! Recycling of water reduces the burden on fresh water consumption, thus making a critical contribution towards water conservation which is a critical issue in our country today.
