ZPMC continues to deliver, sending eight RMG cranes to Sri Lanka’s East Container Terminal and two STS cranes to Italy’s MCT in Gioia Tauro.

China’s ZPMC has delivered the last two STS cranes to the MedCenter Container Terminal (MCT) at the Port of Gioia Tauro in Italy, increasing the terminal’s total number of STS cranes to 25 in addition to three mobile harbor cranes. Since acquiring MCT in 2019, Terminal Investment Limited (TIL) has been pursuing a strategic development policy that includes the equipment upgrade.

The newly delivered cranes have a SWL of 65t, a reach of 72m, and a lifting height of 54m. According to the port authority, these cranes will enable MCT to service vessels up to 25,000 TEU, solidifying the terminal’s capability to handle the world’s largest container ships.

TIL recently inked a deal with the Regional Consortium for the Development of Productive Activities (CORAP) and the Port System Authority of the South Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas as part of larger development plans. In order to support plans for greater operational capacity, the agreement gives MCT rights to additional concession sites, some of which are situated next to the terminal.

MCT is expected to handle around 3 million TEU by the end of the month, the port authorities stated, underscoring its increasing importance as a transhipment center in the Mediterranean. The most recent delivery is the fourth shipment of STS cranes for the facility since November 2019 and follows ZPMC’s delivery of four STS cranes to the terminal.

ZPMC has also delivered the second batch of eight RMGs for the East Container Terminal (ECT) in Sri Lanka, in addition to MCT’s recent capacity improvements. Each of the 40 RMGs in ECT’s automation project has a lifting height of 18 meters, a span of 31.7 meters, and a load capacity of 40 tons under the spreader. According to ZPMC, the RMGs have cutting-edge automation equipment installed.
